Mladá šlechtična Marie de Mézières je od svých mladých let zamilovaná do vévody Jindřicha de Guise. Otec ji však provdá za prince de Montepensier. Marie se marně pokouší zapomenout na svou lásku Jindřicha a nechtěně stane ve středu rivalských a násilnických vášní, do kterých vstoupí také vévoda z Anjou, budoucí král Jindřich III.
