Az ifjú házaspár, John és Jenny Grogan Floridában kezd új életet. Beköltöznek első közös otthonukba, ahol a házasság, a karrier és a családalapítás kihívásai várnak rájuk. John azonban még nem érzi magát felkészültnek az apaságra. Barátja tanácsára örökbe fogadnak egy kölyökkutyát, hogy némi tapasztalatot szerezzenek a gondoskodásról. Marley, a tündéri labrador kölyök azonban hamarosan féktelen kutyussá cseperedik, megbukik a kiképzőiskolában és katasztrófa sújtotta övezetté változtatja otthonukat.
