Auschwitz-Birkenau is ontworpen om te doden. Vier gaskamers doodden duizenden tegelijk, waarbij rook en menselijke as uitbraken. Honger, dorst, ziekte en dwangarbeid brachten de gemiddelde levensduur terug tot minder dan drie maanden. Meer dan 1 miljoen mensen kwamen om in het grootste Duitse nazi-concentratie- en vernietigingskamp. Zeventig jaar na haar bevrijding keert Kitty Hart-Moxon voor een laatste keer terug naar Auschwitz-Birkenau om tussen het afbrokkelende monument te wandelen met de studenten Natalia en Lydia, die op 16-jarige leeftijd nu even oud zijn als toen. Terwijl Kitty hen haar verhaal over het dagelijks bestaan vertelt, komen er thema's naar voren: de altijd aanwezige dreiging van de dood, veerkracht, vriendschap, menselijke kracht, het weerstaan van de voortdurende dodelijke bedoelingen van de nazi's en leven als een dier terwijl ze toch menselijk blijven.
