Martin Alonso a Francisco Pinzonovi jsou dobře známí obchodníci a mořeplavci, původem z přístavu Palos v jižním Španělsku. Ve druhé polovině 15. století jejich podnik prosperuje a oni jsou mezi lidmi ctěni a uznáváni. Bez Pinzonových, zvláště Martina Alonsa, by se Kolumbus jen těžko doplavil ke břehům Ameriky. Kolumbus totiž uzavřel s bratry Pinzonovými partnerství, aby získal lodě, materiál a lidi, které pro svoji výpravu potřeboval. Byly to především navigační schopnosti a praktické dovednosti bratrů Pinzonových, které si v tomto dobrodružství zasluhují největší obdiv.
